Most caregivers haven't been to their own primary care in over a year. There is always a more urgent appointment to drive someone else to.
Make this the year you go. A 30-minute physical can catch the things that quietly become big problems.
Things to mention specifically — even if they feel "small":
- You are a full-time caregiver. Say this out loud. It changes how a good doctor reads everything else you say.
- Persistent fatigue, weight changes, hair changes (thyroid, vitamin D, anemia all worth checking)
- Chest tightness, shortness of breath, racing heart
- Low mood, no interest in things you used to like, crying easily, or feeling nothing at all
- Drinking more than you used to. Using sleep aids more than you used to.
- Pain you've been ignoring — back, jaw, headaches, pelvic floor
You are also allowed to ask:
- For a referral to a therapist who works with caregivers or with grief
- For a note documenting that you are a caregiver, in case you need it for work, FMLA, or your own insurance
- For a flu shot, COVID booster, and anything else you've been meaning to get to
You taking care of your body is not separate from caring for them. It's the only way the care continues.
